2021 National Survey: Report on the Current State of Pharmacy Practice
Activity Overview
The authors of the 2021 National Survey will present top line and detailed data from the survey, highlighting and analyzing meaningful findings on current pharmacy practice and trends likely to impact practice in the future. The 2021 survey evaluated pharmacists’ clinical services activities in hospitals and ambulatory areas, as well as pharmacy practice advancement progress and staffing, retention, and staff development. The survey also measured how health systems are addressing the challenges of current hot topics in pharmacy.
Accreditation
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
Target Audience
This activity is intended for pharmacists and hospital administrators.
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, the learner should be able to:
- Describe trends in hospital pharmacy practice, including the adoption of best practices and Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) 2030 recommendations.
- Explain survey results related to current issues in hospital pharmacy practice.
- Identify gaps in survey results that affect the adoption of best practices or PAI 2030 recommendations.

Douglas Scheckelhoff is Senior Vice President of Practice Advancement at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in Bethesda. He oversees the Center for Pharmacy Practice Advancement, the Center for Medication Safety and Quality, and the Center for Practice Development. He also coordinates ASHP international services and consulting. Mr. Scheckelhoff received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the Ohio State University. He also earned his Master of Science and completed a residency in Hospital Pharmacy at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He held leadership positions at the Ohio State University Medical Center, University of Kentucky Medical Center, and Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC, before coming to ASHP. He has over 230 presentations and publications to his credit on pharmacy related topics.
Craig A. Pedersen, PhD, RPh, FAPhA

Dr. Pedersen is pharmacy manager at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, and Clinical Professor, University of Washington, in Seattle, WA. In this position he provides operational leadership for pharmacy purchasing, sterile compounding, and the investigational drug service. Dr. Pedersen received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Washington and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in pharmacy administration from The University of South Carolina. Previously, Dr. Pedersen was a professor at Ohio State University where he directed the graduate program and the health-system pharmacy administration program. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on medication use system management and pharmacy workforce. He has served as a member of the APhA Board of Trustees and as Speaker of the APhA House of Delegates, and recently completed a term as Chair of the Health-System Academy in Washington State. In 2017, Craig was recognized as the Washington State Health-System Pharmacist of the Year.
Philip Schneider, MS, FASHP, FASPEN, FFIP

Philip J. Schneider is founder and principal of MediHealthInsight, providing consultation to industry and others on matters related to improving the use of medicines, including the application of new technologies in healthcare. He is also Chair of the Alliance for Safe Biologic Medicines (ASBM) International Advisory Board. Professor Schneider holds a faculty appointment as Professor at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy.
Michael Ganio, PharmD, MS, FASHP

Dr. Ganio joined the staff at ASHP as Director of Pharmacy Practice and Quality in January of 2018. As a member of the Center on Medication Safety and Quality team, his responsibilities span the practice of pharmacy and include drug shortages, sterile and non-sterile drug compounding practices, and hazardous drug safety. Dr. Ganio earned his Pharm.D. from Rutgers University Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy and his Master’s degree in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. He completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice residency at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Dr. Ganio is Board Certified as both a Pharmacotherapy Specialist and a Sterile Compounding Pharmacist.
