Activity Overview
Thyroid storm and myxedema coma are rare but associated with high mortality rates ranging from 8-25% and 30-60%, respectively. It is important for EM clinical pharmacists to remain up to date with treatment recommendations of these thyroid emergencies, as they are not commonly encountered in daily clinical practice yet appropriate management is imperative for patient care. With increased knowledge and effective practice strategies, EM clinical pharmacists can improve the treatment of patients with thyroid storm and myxedema coma in the emergency department.
