A case-based approach that incorporates guidance for appropriate use, preparation and safe administration of short- and long-term parenteral nutrition will be incorporatedDiscussion includes compatibility and stability with a focus on lipid injectable emulsions (ILEs), managing drug shortages and transitions of care, and bridging the gap between formal guideline recommendations and the use of parenteral nutrition in daily practice.

This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists involved with parenteral nutrition in acute and long-term care settings. 

After participating in this CPE activity, learners should be able to:

  • Compare sources of guidance for safe parenteral nutrition use and gaps within your practice site.
  • Describe the compatibility and stability issues related to parenteral nutrition and the effect of newer lipid injectable emulsions (ILEs).
  • Evaluate the potential risks and complications for patients receiving parenteral nutrition during transitions of care.
  • List the resources for the appropriate management of drug shortages for patients receiving parenteral nutrition.
