Activity Overview
This Clinical Sessions package is intended for board-certified pharmacists in need of recertification credit and is designed based on the content outline developed by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS). Using a case-based approach, the activities provide high-level, interactive discussions on contemporary and emerging issues in emergency medicine.
The Emergency Medicine Clinical Sessions Recertification Package consists of 4 activities (see table below) and provides up to 6.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education and/or recertification credit.
These activities are part of the ASHP and ACCP professional development program for BCEMP recertification approved by BPS. For pharmacists who maintain more than one certification, two of the activities are approved for multiple specialties (see table below).
These activities were presented as part of the 2024 ACCP Annual Meeting and 2024 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting. Learners who claimed ACPE credit for these activities as part of that meeting should not claim ACPE credit again.
Accreditation
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.
The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as providers of continuing pharmacy education.
Target Audience
These recertification activities are intended for board certified pharmacists seeking to update their knowledge and skills in:
- Management of acute ischemic stroke
- Management of acetaminophen toxicity
- Navigating emergency medicine challenges in pregnancy and pediatrics
- Anticoagulation reversal strategies
Recertification Credit
Board certified pharmacists are eligible to receive up to 6.0 contact hours of recertification credit for completing this course. To earn recertification credit, learners must review the course content and successfully complete the online assessments by the deadline.
ASHP provides an opportunity for remediation. Participants who are unsuccessful with the first assessment attempt may take a second assessment. The second assessment is included at no additional cost.
ACCP and ASHP are approved by BPS as a provider for the recertification of BCEMP.

- Summarize key deficiencies, barriers, and challenges in the implementation of treatments for acute ischemic stroke.
- Critique the medical literature investigating the use of emerging treatment options in the management of acute ischemic stroke.
- Given a patient case, develop a pharmacotherapy plan for treatment of acute ischemic stroke.
- Develop a personal action plan for best practices associated with pharmacist participation in the care of the patient with acute ischemic stroke.

Chart the Course: Navigating Emergency Medicine Challenges in Pregnancy and Pediatrics

- Apply clinical data evaluating pharmacotherapeutic options for managing postpartum hemorrhage in the emergency department.
- Assess strategies for effectively managing medication considerations during both pregnancy and post-delivery breastfeeding.
- Identify considerations for using standard-dose versus high-dose amoxicillin/clavulanate and when to use the three different formulations (4:1, 7:1, and 14:1 ratios of amoxicillin to clavulanate).
- Evaluate strategies that help emergency medicine pharmacists avoid discharge antibiotic prescription errors based on published literature.
- Compare Beta-Lactam R-side chains and the risk of cross-reactivity that exists between them.
- Recommend a pretreatment regimen for a patient with a contrast allergy based on the published literature.
