Activity Overview
This Clinical Sessions package is intended for board-certified pharmacists in need of recertification credit and is designed based on the content outline developed by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS). Using a case-based approach, the activities provide high-level, interactive discussions on contemporary and emerging issues in geriatric pharmacy.
The Geriatric Pharmacy Clinical Sessions Recertification Package consists of 4 activities (see table below) and provides up to 5.0 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education and/or recertification credit.
These activities are part of the ASHP and ACCP professional development program for BCGP recertification approved by BPS. For pharmacists who maintain more than one certification, three of the activities are approved for multiple specialties (see table below).
These activities were presented as part of the 2024 ACCP Annual Meeting and 2024 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting. Learners who claimed ACPE credit for these activities as part of that meeting should not claim ACPE credit again.
Accreditation
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.
The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as providers of continuing pharmacy education.
Target Audience
These recertification activities are intended for board certified pharmacists seeking to update their knowledge and skills in:
- Strategies for implementing deprescribing into practice
- Smoking cessation in older adults
- Newer antidiabetic medications
- Treatments for osteoporosis and bone disorders in special populations
Recertification Credit
Board certified pharmacists are eligible to receive up to 5.0 contact hours of recertification credit for completing this course. To earn recertification credit, learners must review the course content and successfully complete the online assessments by the deadline.
ASHP provides an opportunity for remediation. Participants who are unsuccessful with the first assessment attempt may take a second assessment. The second assessment is included at no additional cost.
ACCP and ASHP are approved by BPS as a provider for the recertification of BCGP.

Clearing the Clouds: Navigating Smoking Cessation in Older Adults

- Compare and contrast monotherapy versus combination pharmacotherapy for the treatment of older adults with tobacco dependence.

- Evaluate obstacles encountered by older adults associated with tobacco cessation and recommend solutions.
- Summarize areas in which a clinical pharmacist can impact the care of older adults with tobacco dependence.

A New Day in Diabetes Control for the Older Adult? Using Newer Medications Across the Continuum of Care

- Evaluate the evidence base of newer diabetic agents in the older adult.
- Design a regimen for an older adult with diabetes considering goals and patient-related variables.
- Formulate a plan for addressing medication-related problems associated with the newer agents for diabetes in the older adult.
- Develop a transition plan for an older adult patient with diabetes from one care venue to another.

Bone Health Updates: “Breaking” Down Literature in Special Populations for Treatments of Osteoporosis and Other Bone Disorders

- Identify risk factors and treatment of osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency, and other bone disorders.
- Interpret recent changes in safety, duration, and efficacy of selected therapy, including the removal of the boxed warning to PTH analogs.
- Assess treatment of osteoporosis and bone diseases in selected patient populations, including men, steroid-induced osteoporosis, pediatrics, and geriatrics.
- Develop a treatment plan for an individual with osteoporosis given patient-specific information.
