Activity Overview 

Alexis Lucero, MPH, CHES, Senior Manager of Program Operations at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), discusses the intricacies and scope of suicide, reviews key research findings on the risk factors and warning signs for suicide, outlines recommendations for suicide prevention, and provides guidance on addressing suicidal crisis. Learners will be guided to challenge and expand their knowledge of this leading cause of death and develop strategies for addressing suicide risk and prevention within their own institutions.

This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of all members of the pharmacy workforce, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, or student pharmacists, who may interact or come in contact with indivividuals displaying risk factors or warning signs for suicide.

  • Describe the scope of the problem and prevention research using the latest data on suicide in the United States and worldwide.
  • Identify suicide risk factors and warning signs using health, historical, and environmental factors.
  • Recall the protective factors that lower suicide risk as well as strategies for managing mental health and proactively engaging in self-care.
  • Recite guidance on how to get help for yourself or someone else in a suicidal crisis.
