Activity Overview

Poliovirus infection, more often vaccine-derived than wild type, still occurs in some countries and can easily be carried into the United States and spread in communities with low vaccine rates. Clinicians may not recognize risk of exposure to poliovirus during international travel and may fail to offer appropriate/needed vaccine(s). This podcast reviews the history of polio and information on vaccination.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.

These activities were planned to meet the educational needs of healthcare professionals desiring to increase knowledge about poliovirus and vaccination.

After completing this activity, the learner should be able to…

  • Summarize the pathogenesis, transmission, epidemiology, and clinical presentation of poliovirus infection and poliomyelitis.
  • Identify indication(s) and a vaccine strategy for adults in the United States who are unvaccinated, incompletely vaccinated, or have unknown polio vaccination status.
  • Recognize challenges to the global eradication of poliovirus.
