Activity Overview

In this interprofessional activity, expert faculty will discuss the recently released practice guidelines on monitoring and antagonism of neuromuscular blockade and use patient cases to develop an evidence-based approach for the management of neuromuscular monitoring during anesthesia and antagonism of neuromuscular blocking agents prior to extubation. Strategies to improve interprofessional collaboration in emergency situations to ensure that appropriate neuromuscular blockade use, monitoring, and reversal will also be shared.

  • Interpret recently released practice guidelines on monitoring and antagonism of neuromuscular blockade.
  • Develop an evidence-based approach for the management of neuromuscular monitoring during anesthesia and antagonism of neuromuscular blocking agents prior to extubation.

More information on Rachel C. Wolfe

Dr. Wolfe is Clinical Pharmacy Specialist of Perioperative and Surgical Critical Care at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Missouri. She is also Adjunct Clinical Instructor for the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Goldfarb School of Nursing and St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Dr. Wolfe is responsible for the provision of clinical pharmacy services in the perioperative and periprocedural environment and for the coordination of clinical services provided by four operating room pharmacy satellites. She also serves as a preceptor for Doctor of Pharmacy students and pharmacy residents and is co-chair of the Enhanced Surgical Recovery Pharmacy & Documentation committee and the Analgesia subcommittee of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics committee. Dr. Wolfe earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from St. Louis College of Pharmacy and Master of Health Administration degree from Webster University, also in St. Louis. She completed her residency training at University of Kentucky HealthCare, and she is board certified in critical care. Dr. Wolfe is a member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, American Society of Enhanced Recovery, and Society of Critical Care Medicine. In 2011 she received Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s David A. Gee Meritorious Service Award and Team Award for Quality Improvement for Anesthesia Medication Management.

Dr. Renew is currently an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and serves as the Vice Chair of Research for his department at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Renew completed his anesthesiology residency at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida and his Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Renew is an active researcher and leads a team interested in neuromuscular blockade, neuromuscular blockade monitoring, and practical strategies to optimize neuromuscular blockade management.  In addition to his research efforts, he serves as the Associate Residency Director and is passionate about educating the next generation of anesthesiologists on the best way to manage neuromuscular blockade. 


Jeffery S. Vender, MD, MCCM, MBA is the Emeritus, Harris Family Foundation Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at NorthShore University Health System in Evanston, Illinois and a Clinical Professor at the University of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He is a past member of the NorthShore University Health System Faculty Practice Associates Board of Directors, Past Chair of the Medical Executive Committee for the Professional Staff at NorthShore and previously served on Northshore’s Board of Directors. Dr. Vender served as Chair of Anesthesia from 1990-2015 and received an appointment of adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He served as the Director of the Critical Care Services at Evanston Hospital from 1987-2000 and the Interim Chairman at Northwestern University Department of Anesthesiology from July 1999 until October 2000. Dr. Vender has participated and Chaired numerous state and national committees of various medical organizations, edited several medical texts, has published over 135 articles and book chapters and has been an invited lecturer at over 250 national and international meetings on topics of anesthesiology, critical care, organizational change, and leadership. In addition, Dr. Vender serves as an editor and/or reviewer for many medical journals.
