Activity Overview

Pharmacists lack knowledge in the pathophysiology of pain in SCD as well as in the best practices and approaches to treatment for painful episodes and chronic pain syndromes. Pharmacists are not comfortable managing pain in this patient population due to lack of knowledge about etiology and the use of high doses of opioid analgesics and complex regimens

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.

These activities were planned to meet the educational needs of any pharmacist practicing who may encounter patients with pain related to SCD either in an inpatient or outpatient setting

After participating in this CPE activity, participants should be able to:

  • Give examples of best practices in pain management for patients with sickle cell disease
  • Discuss common challenges to pain management in patients with SCD experiencing acute painful episodes.
