Activity Overview

Intrathecal targeted drug delivery (ITDD) is gaining momentum for use for chronic pain, refractory cancer pain, or treatment of pain in patients with opioid use disorders. As a result, pharmacists are asked to help with dosing conversions and adjustments of intrathecal pumps. Pharmacists lack knowledge of IT pumps and medications utilized for intrathecal delivery. With the most current information and effective practice strategies, pharmacists can improve their treatment of pain patients with IT pumps and determine appropriate candidacy for ITDD use.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.

These activities were planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists who may encounter patients with an implanted intrathecal pump for pain management.

After completing this activity, the learner should be able to…

  • Describe an intrathecal pump and its place in therapy.
  • List medications utilized in intrathecal pumps.
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of using intrathecal pumps.
