Activity Overview
Health systems have worked diligently to ensure that they are in compliance with the revised USP Chapter <797> requirements. This Frontline Conversations session will focus on strategies for bringing back or increasing sterile compounding in healthcare facilities. This session follows a live webinar that summarized strategies to bring back or increase sterile compounding in healthcare facilities and special considerations for compounded sterile products (CSPs) for adult versus pediatric populations. This session also follows an interactive, web-based educational program that focused on assigning beyond use dates for CSPs.
No formal presentation was planned for this session. Attendees submitted questions for the faculty experts.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.
This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and medication safety officers practicing in hospitals and health systems, including all settings responsible for preparing, labeling, packaging, storing, and distributing compounded sterile preparations.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Assess resources, financial implications, and risk for bringing back or increasing sterile compounding within healthcare facilities.
Analyze the important differences in adult versus pediatric compounded sterile products including compatibility and stability considerations.
Patricia C. Kienle, MPA, BCSCP, FASHP, is Director of Accreditation and Medication Safety for Cardinal Health. She received her pharmacy degree from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and a Master in Public Administration degree from Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She is author of The Chapter <795> Answer Book, The Chapter <797> Answer Book, and The Chapter <800> Answer Book and co-author of Meeting Accreditation Standards: A Pharmacy Preparation Guide. With over 750 invited presentations and 100 publications, she has special interests in medication safety, compounding sterile preparations, accreditation, and regulatory issues.
Cynthia A. Brasher, PharmD, MS, BCSCP Manager of Compounding St. Jude Children's Research Center Memphis, Tennessee
Cynthia A. Brasher, PharmD, MS, BCSCP is the manager of compounding at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. She received her PharmD from the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, completed the health systems pharmacy administration PGY1/PGY2 residency program at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, and a master’s in pharmacy administration through the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Currently, Cindy is serving on the ASHP Section Advisory Group on Compounding and the Tennessee Pharmacist Association Compounding Society.
Jaclyn M. Jaskowiak, PharmD, BCPS, BCSCP Inpatient Pharmacist Specialist, Compounding Compliance and Operations UC San Diego Health La Jolla, California
Jaclyn M. Jaskowiak, PharmD, BCPS, BCSCP is an Inpatient Pharmacist Specialist for compounding compliance and operations at UC San Diego Health and Affiliate Faculty at the UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She has received formal training in environmental monitoring, completed two USP designated person training programs, and completed the Comprehensive cGMP Pharmaceutical Aseptic Training Course at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Jaskowiak has over 17 years of health-system experience including inpatient, outpatient infusion center, and clinical research pharmacy services. Dr. Jaskowiak currently serves as Chair of the ASHP Section of Inpatient Care Practitioners Section Advisory Group on Compounding Practice, Chair of the CSHP Compounding Task Force, Chair of the SDSHP Compounding Committee, and is board certified in compounded sterile preparations and pharmacotherapy.
