The Pharmacy Technician: Hazardous Drugs Microcredential is a PTCB-recognized education/training program designed to prepare pharmacy technicians for the PTCB Hazardous Drugs Certificate exam. This microcredential will equip pharmacy technicians with the foundational knowledge needed to play a leadership role in their pharmacies and organizations related to managing hazardous drugs. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Once a learner has completed the educational curriculum, they will have the opportunity to complete an online comprehensive exam. Once the learner passes the exam (minimum 80% passing rate; unlimited attempts permitted), they will earn the statement of achievement and Credly badge for the microcredential.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.
Recognize additional documents that influence hazardous drug compounding.
Describe the lifecycle of hazardous drugs in healthcare settings.
Identify the three types of engineering controls used when handling hazardous drugs.
Recognize the risk points where hazardous drug contamination may occur.
Describe the steps in the hazardous drug cleaning process and the appropriate response to hazardous drug spills.
Describe key safety strategies for minimizing the risk of exposure to hazardous drugs during compounding and administration including, but not limited to; the appropriate selection, donning, and doffing of personal protective equipment.
Identify the recommendations in USP <800> that promote safe practices for handling hazardous drugs.
Describe the process for monitoring potential contamination from hazardous drug residue.
In accordance with our accreditor’s Standards of Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education, ASHP requires that all individuals in control of content disclose all financial relationships with ineligible companies. Important Note – ACPE 60 Day Deadline:
Per ACPE requirements, CPE credit must be claimed within 60 days of being earned. To verify that you have completed the required steps and to ensure your credits have been reported to CPE Monitor, check your NABP eProfile account to validate that your credits were transferred successfully before the ACPE 60-day deadline. After the 60-day deadline, ASHP will no longer be able to award credit for this activity.
