Activity Overview
The pharmacy profession is facing a crucial moment as declining pharmacy school enrollments and continued workforce shortages threaten the future of specialized practice areas. As operational staffing positions become increasingly strained, many institutions are forced to get creative with how to sustain and grow their specialized clinical and research services. This continuing education program will explore current trends in pharmacy school enrollments and workforce distribution, highlighting the impact on specialized practice including clinical trial pharmacy and other niche areas of our field. Participants in this activity will examine the importance of engaging young learners early, and how to build awareness of the diverse opportunities within our profession. The session will highlight strategies for creating new pathways for specialized pharmacy practice, featuring a case study of Brigham and Women’s Hospital on its recent growth in Co-Op students (PharmD and non-PharmD), enhanced IPPE and APPE engagement, and the establishment of a PGY-2 pharmacy residency in Investigational Drugs and Research.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.
This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacy leaders, management, and administrators responsible for hiring, staffing, and developing talent within their respective departments. It is particularly relevant to those who oversee specialized practice areas and specialized residency training programs.
