Activity Overview
Between a live 1.5 hour symposium and two podcasts, experts will differentiate the various pneumococcal vaccines including their recommended indications and the serotypes they cover; discuss the burden of pneumococcal disease and the risks associated with non-invasive and invasive disease; review recent guideline recommendations and how to apply them to different patient populations including children, adults, and those with and without chronic conditions; identify methods to improve the number of pneumococcal vaccinations given by pharmacists and incorporate best practices in patient education.

This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists who practice in hospitals, health systems, specialty pharmacies, ambulatory clinics, and community settings who manage patients at risk for pneumococcal disease in children and adults.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Identify the epidemiology and burden of pneumococcal disease in pediatric and adult patients.
Differentiate between invasive and non-invasive pneumococcal disease risks in pediatric and adult populations with and without chronic conditions.
Apply current clinical evidence and guideline recommendations when selecting pneumococcal vaccinations for all pediatric and adult populations.
Analyze opportunities to provide pneumococcal vaccinations and pneumococcal vaccine education into the pharmacist workflow to improve vaccination rates.

Monica Mahoney, PharmD, BCPS, BCIDP, FCCP, FIDSA, FIDP, FMSHP is a clinical pharmacy specialist in the outpatient infectious diseases and outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) clinics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. Dr. Mahoney received her PharmD degree from MCPHS University in Boston, Massachusetts. She completed postgraduate year 1 residency and postgraduate year 2 infectious diseases residency at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. She is an active member of many pharmacy and infectious diseases professional organizations, including ASHP, the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists, the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. She is an associate editor at Open Forum Infectious Diseases (OFID), section editor at Contagion Live, and on the editorial board for Antimicrobial Stewardship & Hospital Epidemiology (ASHE).
Sarah Parsons, PharmD, BCPPS, FPPA Clinical Pharmacy Specialist; Pediatric Infectious Diseases Antimicrobial Stewardship Co-Lead Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters Norfolk, Virginia
Sarah Parsons, PharmD, BCPPS, FPPA is a clinical pharmacy specialist in pediatric infectious diseases and the co-director of the antimicrobial stewardship program at the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters. Dr. Parsons received her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Virginia Commonwealth School of Pharmacy. She completed a PGY1 with pediatric focus at HCA Health system in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Parsons specializes in the treatment of multi-drug resistant gram negative infections, nontuberculous mycobacterium in cystic fibrosis, COVID/MIS-C, and vaccine preventable diseases in children. She is an active member of many pharmacy, pediatric, and infectious diseases professional organizations, including ASHP, the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists, the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, and is a 2025 fellow of the Pediatric Pharmacy Association.
Jeffery S. Vender, MD, MCCM, MBA is the Emeritus, Harris Family Foundation Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at NorthShore University Health System in Evanston, Illinois and a Clinical Professor at the University of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He is a past member of the NorthShore University Health System Faculty Practice Associates Board of Directors, Past Chair of the Medical Executive Committee for the Professional Staff at NorthShore and previously served on Northshore’s Board of Directors. Dr. Vender served as Chair of Anesthesia from 1990-2015 and received an appointment of adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He served as the Director of the Critical Care Services at Evanston Hospital from 1987-2000 and the Interim Chairman at Northwestern University Department of Anesthesiology from July 1999 until October 2000. Dr. Vender has participated and Chaired numerous state and national committees of various medical organizations, edited several medical texts, has published over 135 articles and book chapters and has been an invited lecturer at over 250 national and international meetings on topics of anesthesiology, critical care, organizational change, and leadership. In addition, Dr. Vender serves as an editor and/or reviewer for many medical journals.
