Activity Overview
This dynamic session will explore why pharmacy clinicians and healthcare systems are shifting from race-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for medication-related decision-making. Attendees will gain practical insight into why eGFR, especially when adjusted for individual body surface area, offers greater accuracy than the traditional Cockcroft-Gault method, particularly in patients at the extremes of body size. Through real-world clinical scenarios, participants will also learn how incorporating cystatin C (alone or alongside serum creatinine) enhances precision in eGFR estimation. Join us for a case-based discussion that will empower pharmacists to confidently apply these evolving practices in medication-related decision-making.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.
This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists that estimate kidney function for medication-related decision-making in persons with decreased kidney function.
After completing this activity, the learner should be able to:
Describe the rationale for assessing kidney function using a non-race-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) rather than Cockcroft-Gault estimated creatinine clearance (C-G eCrCL).
Apply BSA-adjusted eGFR to medication-related decision-making, given a patient case.
Evaluateclinical indications forincorporating cystatin C into the eGFR calculation for medication-related decisions.
