Activity Overview

This Clinical Sessions package is intended for board-certified pharmacists in need of recertification credit and is designed based on the content outline developed by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS). Using a case-based approach, the activities provide high-level, interactive discussions on contemporary and emerging issues in critical care.

The Critical Care Pharmacy Clinical Sessions Recertification Package consists of 3 activities (see table below) and provides up to 4.5 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education and/or recertification credit.

These activities are part of the ASHP and ACCP professional development program for BCCCP recertification approved by BPS. For pharmacists who maintain more than one certification, each of the activities are approved for multiple specialties (see table below).

These activities were presented as part of the 2025 ACCP Annual Meeting and 2025 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting. Learners who claimed ACPE credit for these activities as part of that meeting should not claim ACPE credit again.

Accreditation

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as providers of continuing pharmacy education.

Target Audience

These recertification activities are intended for board certified pharmacists seeking to update their knowledge and skills in:

Use of mainstay medications in RSI, induction agents and neuromuscular blocking agents, which assist with achieving first pass success
Improve outcomes and approaches in patients with drug-induced hyperthermia (DIH)
Aspects of procedural sedation and commonly used agents for both sedation and analgesia

Recertification Credit

Board-certified pharmacists are eligible to receive up to 4.5 contact hours of recertification credit for completing this course. To earn recertification credit, learners must review the course content and successfully complete the online assessments by the deadline.

ASHP provides an opportunity for remediation. Participants who are unsuccessful with the first assessment attempt may take a second assessment. The second assessment is included at no additional cost.

ACCP and ASHP are approved by BPS as a provider for the recertification of BCCCP.

Select an optimal induction and paralytic agent for a patient using evidence-based guideline recommendations and recent literature.
Develop a pharmacotherapy plan to prevent and/or treat peri-intubation hypotension.
Given a patient case, choose the most appropriate paralytic reversal strategy.

Hot Takes on the Hot Body: Management of Drug-Induced Hyperthermia

Define the pharmacist’s role in drug-induced hyperthermia management and prevention.
Develop streamlined processes for the identification and continued treatment of drug-induced hyperthermia in clinical settings.
Describe the role of a drug-induced hyperthermia response team.

Beyond Counting Sheep: Inhaled and Procedural Sedation in the ED and ICU

Evaluate current literature regarding agents used for sedation and analgesia in the setting of procedural sedation.
Discuss patient-specific variables that have the potential to impact the safety and efficacy of the various pharmacotherapy options used in procedural sedation.
Critique procedural sedation pharmacotherapy implementation strategies with the goal of optimizing pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles.
Recognize options for alternative routes of administration and potential considerations based on patient-specific factors.
Identify important components that should be included in workflows and protocols for procedural sedation (e.g., stocking atomizers for intranasal administration, antidotal therapy availability, bedside monitoring).
