Overview
Pharmacists are increasingly authorized to prescribe hormonal contraceptives, but state laws, protocols, and scope of practice vary by jurisdiction and practice setting. Implementation in the community can be challenging due to state-specific legal requirements, and pharmacists may face knowledge gaps in patient assessment, counseling, and understanding the principles of reproductive justice to ensure equitable, patient-centered care. As more states adopt or expand pharmacist prescribing authority, education on evolving regulations is essential. Targeted training can equip pharmacists with clinical knowledge, legal awareness, and communication skills needed to initiate safe, evidence-based contraceptive prescribing. By closing these knowledge gaps, pharmacists can increase contraceptive access, address health disparities, and improve reproductive health outcomes.
