Activity Overview
Insulin is a high-risk, high-alert medication with an inherent possibility of patient harm with its use in health-system settings. This webinarprovides an overview of commonly encountered operational and clinical challenges to its safe use. Subject matter experts from multiple institutions will outline problematic concerns with insulin and provide innovative solutions for its safe utilization.The activity will increase participants awareness of risk in these circumstances and provide strategies to improve the safety of insulin utilization.
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.
This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of pharmacists involved in the policy development, operational and dispensing aspects of insulin in regards to intravenous push (IVP) doses, use of patient’s own insulin pump/CGM and aspects of CDS/independent double checks.
After completing this activity, the learner should be able to:
Describe the preparation and dispensing safety challenges of intravenous push (IVP) insulin.
Discuss the safety concerns of patient controlled insulin protocols including the safe use of patient’s own insulin pump systems and/or continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices.
Summarize the utility and a limitation of insulin safety interventions such as clinical decision support.
