Overview
Many practicing pharmacists have responsibilities for teaching student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacist colleagues, and/or other healthcare professionals. By nature of their education and training, pharmacists have valuable knowledge to impart. However, they often have little or no formal background in the fundamentals of teaching. The ASHP Teaching Certificate for Pharmacists’ curriculum is designed for pharmacists who wish to pursue teaching in academic and/or practice-based settings. This certificate is appropriate for pharmacists who aspire to develop the knowledge and skills needed to effectively share their knowledge with learners.
The ASHP Teaching Certificate for Pharmacists is an online, self-paced learning activity. The curriculum is comprised of three tracks that offer a well-rounded experience. The core track covers the fundamentals of teaching, the academic teaching track concentrates on traditional didactic instruction, and the experiential teaching track focuses on teaching in practice environments.
Each participant must identify a mentor to work with throughout the program, preferably an experienced mentor at the participant’s work/practice site. To earn the certificate, the participant must upload their mentor’s biographical sketch, a teaching philosophy, and the table of contents from their teaching portfolio; and receive approval from ASHP on those submissions.
Teaching Certificate For Pharmacists Requirements
Learners will upload the following for approval from an ASHP subject matter expert: (1) biographical sketch from their proposed mentor, (2) teaching philosophy statement, and (3) the table of contents from their teaching portfolio. If a submission is not approved, the learner will receive feedback with a requirement to revise and resubmit. Once all three submissions are approved, the learner will earn the professional certificate.
Accreditation
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.
Target Audience
The ASHP Teaching Certificate for Pharmacists is intended for pharmacists seeking to expand their knowledge and skills in teaching and precepting student and resident pharmacists, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals.

Methods and CE Requirements
Each activity consists of audio, video, and/or handouts and evaluations. Learners must review all content and complete the evaluations to receive continuing pharmacy education credit for each activity.
Follow the prompts to claim, view, or print the statement of credit within 60 days after completing the activity.
Important Note – ACPE 60 Day Deadline:
Per ACPE requirements, CPE credit must be claimed within 60 days of being earned. To verify that you have completed the required steps and to ensure your credits have been reported to CPE Monitor, check your NABP profile account to validate that your credits were transferred successfully before the ACPE 60-day deadline. After the 60-day deadline, ASHP will no longer be able to award credit for this activity.
The ASHP PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATES℠ educational product line contains learning activities that are ACPE-accredited knowledge and application-based continuing education. This is not an ACPE Certificate Program. Upon successful completion of the activities, the learner will be able to download an ASHP Professional Certificate.
