Activity Overview

The landscape of peripartum healthcare has changed over the years. Today, more women are presenting with advanced age, obesity, and complex co-morbid conditions. Many hospital systems do not have a dedicated pharmacist for these complex patients, and thus, care for these patients is often provided by a general clinical pharmacist.  This webinar will help the clinical pharmacist by providing an overview of obstetric (OB) physiology, common OB emergencies, and current OB resources. We will use case-based learning techniques and provide suggestions to optimize the care of the contemporary OB patient.

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education with Commendation.

This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of… pharmacists practicing in care settings that provide generalized obstetric care to patients and may or may not have a dedicated/specialized pharmacist trained in the nuances of the obstetric population.

After completing this activity, the learner should be able to…

  • Identify physiologic changes unique to obstetric patients that affect medication pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics.
  • Describe what health trends have contributed to the increased comlexity of providing care to obstetric patients.
  • Discuss current contributors to increasing maternal mortality and pharmacotherapy options, treatment goals, and mortality prevention approaches to common OB conditions.
