This continuing pharmacy education activity is designed for pharmacists with an interest in application of RxNorm.

Activity Overview

RxNorm, produced by The National Library of Medicine, is part of the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) that integrates standards, coding, terminology, classifications to create and maintain interoperable electronic health records. Learn the fundamental background and maintenance of RxNorm, its uses, files and mapping, and why it is necessary and important for interoperability between EHRs.

Learning Objectives

  • List the three main files that comprise RxNorm and how they relate to each other.
  • Explain how to use RxNorm to map medication data between an IV workflow system and a pump library.
  • Describe ongoing changes in RxNorm that require regular maintenance of the relationship between a formulary and RxNorm.

Methods and CE Requirements

This activity consists of recorded faculty slides presentations, active learning activities, discussion, and handouts. Participants must participate in the entire activity and complete all the required components to claim continuing pharmacy education credit online at ASHP eLearning Portal. Follow the prompts to claim and view or print the statement of credit immediately or within 60 days of completing the activity.

Per ACPE requirements, CPE credit must be claimed within 60 days of being earned.
