This product is an ASHP eLearning activity developed in partnership with the Institute for Safe Medication Practices.

Product Description

These modules are designed for participants to recognize the importance of improving medication safety in hospitals, health systems, and a variety of related settings. Participants will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to identify and engage in efforts to minimize and eliminate the occurrence of medication errors. The curriculum will cover the fundamental principles of the medication use process and medication safety culture. The course also will present strategies for identifying and implementing opportunities for medication safety improvements. After completing all the modules, participants should be proficient in the fundamental concepts required for risk identification, medication error investigation, risk reduction, and general actions required to sustain safe medication practices in their practice settings.

Practice exercises allow the learner to demonstrate knowledge learned and competency gained from completing the education modules. Successful completion of an application-based case study is required to earn a professional certificate and is an additional step after completing the continuing education modules. Participants may opt to only earn the continuing education credit associated with the curriculum and not pursue the case study analysis required to earn the professional certificate.

This program is accredited for continuing education for pharmacists, physicians, nurses, and pharmacy technicians. This activity meets the criteria of the Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety for CPPS CE hours.

Professional Certificate Requirement

Learners wishing to earn a professional certificate in medication safety should feel confident about the material learned in the 16 CE modules before attempting the case study evaluation. In addition, learners with a recent background working as a health professional will benefit from their experience when analyzing their selected case. This evaluation will require the learner to choose one of two case studies and apply their knowledge from the program to a real-life scenario. A learner must thoroughly read a case summary and successfully complete 9 questions/activities on an ASHP-provided form. Due to the length and complexity of this case study and the subsequent review, learners wishing to earn a certificate will be limited to two opportunities for successful completion.
