This activity will enable practitioners to be more effective in their efforts to educate patients and other health care professionals regarding the optimal use of medications, engage in self-monitoring behaviors and adopt healthy lifestyle habits.
This module may be used as an adjunct to the online Ambulatory Care Review Course for those preparing for the Ambulatory Care Board Certification Specialty Examination or as an independent learning activity to increase the knowledge of adult education principles.
At the completion of this application –based activity, the participant will be able to:
1. Describe the interconnections between motivation and learning.
2. Apply the key principles of adult learning to an instructional event (or encounter) with a patient, student or colleague.
3. Select appropriate instructional materials and methods based on learner-specific characteristics, settings and objectives.
4. List the essential components of an effective patient or professional education program
Accreditation for Pharmacists
The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and American Pharmacists Association are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
This activity provides 1 hour (0.1 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit.
Methods and Formats: This online activity consists of audio and slides for one presentation, an attestation statement, and activity evaluation. Participants must view the entire presentation, complete the attestation statement and course evaluation to receive continuing pharmacy education credit. Participants may print their official statements of continuing pharmacy education credit immediately. The estimated time to complete this activity is 1 hour.
Target Audience: This activity is intended for pharmacy practitioners who are seeking to update their knowledge and skills commensurate with a board certification examination.

Dr. Haines is Professor and Vice Chair for Clinical Services in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in Baltimore, Maryland and Clinical Pharmacy Specialist – Primary Care at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. He is a past‐president of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), having served on the ACCP Board of Regents from 2002 until 2008. He is currently a member of the American Society of Health‐System Pharmacists (ASHP) Commission on Credentialing (COC), the body that sets standards and accredits pharmacy residency and technician training programs in the United States. He is the Editor‐in‐Chief of iForum Rx, an online journal club for ambulatory care pharmacy specialists, and has served on numerous editorial boards including Pharmacotherapy, Current Medical Research and Opinion, the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA), and the Pharmacists’ Letter. Dr. Haines earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences and his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS), A Board Certificed Ambulatory Care Pharmacist (BCACP), and Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC‐ADM).
Dr. Haines is a fellow in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (FCCP), American Society of Health‐ System Pharmacists (FASHP), and the American Pharmacists Association (FAPhA). Dr. Haines was elected a Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academies of Practice (2006), received the Distinguished Achievement Award in Ambulatory and Community Practice from APhA (2010), and was the recipient of the 2010 ACCP Educator Award.

In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medication Education’s Standards for Commercial Support and the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education’s Standards for Commercial Support, APhA and ASHP require that all individuals involved in the development of activity content disclose their relevant financial relationships. A person has a relevant financial relationship if the individual of his or her spouse/partner has a financial relationship (e.g. employee, consultant, research grant recipient, speakers bureau, or stockholder) in any amount occurring the in the last 12 months with a commercial interest whose products or series may be discussed in the educational activity content over which the individual has control. The existence of these relationships is provided for the information of participants and should not be assumed to have an adverse impact on the content.
